The Knowledge Management Hub is releasing today two new factsheets on pre-departure reintegration assistance as part of the “Reintegration Assistance: Good, Promising and Innovative Practices Series”.

The focus of the newly released factsheets is on pre-departure reintegration assistance.

Facilitating a continuum of reintegration assistance from the pre-departure to the post-arrival phases has long been considered as a good practice under Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programmes, as the reintegration process already starts before the return takes place. The IOM Reintegration Handbook, under its Module 1 (“An Integrated Approach to Reintegration”), stresses that "whenever possible, migrants [...] should be assisted with the preparation for reintegration before departure. Such preparation can include individual assessments and initial reintegration counselling in the host country as well as the preparation of referrals or partnerships in the country of origin."

The two factsheets showcase pre-departure reintegration assistance practices in the Netherlands and in Morocco, and are available on the Platform’s repository:

In the Netherlands, IOM and Foundation WereldWijd have partnered under the WorldTools project to provide returning migrants with tools and equipment useful to their reintegration in their countries of origin and to assist them in shipping the goods at no cost for returnees.

In Morocco, IOM implements the FORAS project that provides migrants willing to return to selected countries of origin with up-to-date information about opportunities and challenges associated with the reintegration process in these countries as well as various pre-departure training courses addressing the economic, social and psychosocial dimensions of reintegration.

This series of factsheets aims at highlighting good or promising reintegration practices along with operational details and recommendations allowing reintegration practitioners to learn more about such activities, understand how they are implemented and could potentially be replicated or adapted in their respective contexts.

Do not hesitate to get in touch with us and share good and promising practices on reintegration assistance. The information and evidence collected on such practices is translated into short knowledge bites in the form of factsheets for easy dissemination among reintegration practitioners.
