This project aims to continue the successful cooperation between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in the field of migrant protection and assistance and builds on IOM Ghana’s existing Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) structure and ongoing projects, including the European Union (EU)-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration.

The objective is to contribute to the provision of comprehensive, gender-sensitive and sustainable assistance to Ghanaian returning migrants and their communities and opportunities for potential migrants with a specific focus on the provision of livelihoods, self and wage employment and education, for a stronger governance of migration in the country. Particular focus is given to the psychosocial aspects of the reintegration of returnees and the involvement of their communities of origin.

IOM collaborates with GIZ to ensure flexibility in responding to needs in reintegration assistance and expanding AVRR assistance provision in all regions of Ghana with a specific focus on regions with high volumes of return. During the first phase of the project solid partnerships with local organizations were built. These partnerships helped to ensure IOM Ghana’s ability to implement activities across regions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project will support sustainable return migration and reintegration interventions by strengthening relevant capacities among key stakeholders. The established referral system between IOM’s AVRR support and the services of the Ghanaian-German Centre (GGC) are enhanced to facilitate access to training and reintegration opportunities for beneficiaries.

To ensure a comprehensive response to beneficiaries’ needs the project addresses vulnerabilities of beneficiaries by providing them with reintegration/business counseling and mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), as needed.
