Privacy Policy

IOM seeks to ensure that personal information processed through the Website is handled with the utmost care and confidentiality. Data privacy is a human right and is essential to human dignity.

This Privacy Policy explains in which manner IOM collects, stores, uses, shares or otherwise processes information about the User on the Website. By accessing and using this Website, the User agrees to the terms in this Privacy Policy (hereinafter referred to as the “Privacy Policy”).

Personal Information

IOM does not collect personal information unless such information is voluntarily disclosed, for example for certain functions of the Website. In all cases, IOM will store personal information safely and securely and will only process personal information of the User for the specified purpose for which it was disclosed.  

IOM may collect certain personal data for the creation of a User’s personal account, for which full name, username, country and email address are required. Job title, picture and areas of expertise and interest may also be provided. The information provided through the registration process will be shared with other Users, allowing for further interaction between Users in the Community Area. IOM will only use the personal information for the purpose of creating a profile in the Website to join the Community Area, to be able to interact with other Users on matters related to specialized migrant protection areas through online thematic groups. 

IOM may also request personal data for other uses such as to request [training] materials available under Learning. The User will be requested to provide certain data, such as full name, email address, organization and country. This information is collected to assist IOM in understanding Users’ interests and use of the requested material. IOM may also contact the User for follow-up on the requested material.  

Users must be of 18 years of age or older to be able to create a personal account. IOM does not sell, distribute or rent personal information collected on the Website. Any voluntarily provided personal information collected, received, used, transferred, or stored by IOM will be protected by strict conditions of confidentiality and security at all stages of data collection and processing. IOM will not use the personal information for other purpose than outlined in this Privacy Policy. 

IOM relies on online service providers for the provision of services, such as cloud hosting providers. IOM controls all processing of the data, including personal data. Data is encrypted and cannot be accessed by the cloud hosting providers. 

At any time, the User may request that IOM delete any personal data disclosed by the User at any time by contacting the Website Support Team: migrantprotectionplatform@iom.int.

Monitoring Website Traffic

IOM monitors general trends in the use of its websites. IOM monitors the overall usage of the Website, which helps IOM make the Website more user-friendly. For this, IOM gathers standard data from server logs, including browser type, device type, operating system, the website that referred you to this Website, files downloaded, pages on the Website visited, with dates and times, data from our cookies (see use of cookies below). With the exception of the IP (Internet protocol) address, none of the data is linked to any personal information.

To improve the User(s) browsing experience, IOM uses cookies that collect information on the User(s) browsing behaviour when using the Website. Cookies enable IOM to better tailor its Website to the Users needs and preferences. By using the IOM Website, you agree that we can place cookies on your browsing device. Cookies can be switched off by changing the browser settings but doing so may affect the functionality of certain areas of the Website.

What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small data files placed on the User’s computer or other devices when the User visits the Website. The data that cookies collect are different than any personal information that the User chooses to disclose to IOM for a specific purpose. They identify the User’s browsing device to IOM’s servers via the User’s IP address and provide a variety of information, such as the area(s) of the website visited by the User and for how long. If the User returns to the Website, IOM can determine whether the User previously visited a given page based on the cookie from his/her previous visit. The use of cookies is very common because cookies help website administrators meet the needs of the User(s).

Managing Cookies: Enabling and Disabling Cookies?
To limit the use of cookies, the User can set the browser to notify him/her before any cookies are installed on the User’s device, having the choice to accept or reject the cookie. The browser can also be set to disable cookies altogether. In case of disabling cookies, the User may not be able to use certain features on the Website and may be required to re-enter information more frequently to use certain services on the Website.
